Pet sitting

It's nice to have a pet or two. Cats supposedly don't get attached to the owners, but my experience tells me something different...
Last year, we organised our holidays abroad. Before we left, we had made all preparations to make sure our cat would be well looked after. I bought her favourite food, medicines to deworm and deflea her. I also wrote a whole page of her routines for my friend who was staying to look after our cat. I was very happy knowing my pet was safe and would be looked after properly.
It was a great shock for me to see my cat after we came back. She was skinny and looked unhappy. I thought I would have to pay our vet a visit the next day.
To my surprise, it wasn't necessary. As soon as we lied down, Zuzia jumped up onto our bed and made herself a comfortble spot. Soon after I could hear a loud, content purring. It wasn't purring of a sick animal it was the purring of a pet, who finally got its owners back! The next morning, when we were having breakfast, our cat was having breakfast too. She licked her platter clean, washed herself and waited to be cuddled. Even though the weather was brilliant, she did not go outside to enjoy the sun. Instead, she was sitting next to us when we were unpacking our bags and sorting the washing. And you could hear this content purring all the time...She just missed us! As soon as she realised we were back for good, she started eating properly and quickly regained her weight.

Which brings me to the problem of pet sitting. On one side: it's a great and costly problem. You are lucky, if you live next to your family or friends, who are happy and able to look after your pet while you are away. If you don't, you may have to start browsing through advertisements of people offering their pet sitting services and hope for the best. It's easy to ask for references, but still, if they are good, you worry about the well being of you pet and you have to make this difficult first move.
Another option is to ask your local pet shop if they would look after your animal. This can cost a bit, but you may have to go for this option if nothing else is available.

I was asked yesterday to look after two tortoises by my friend. I would be a bit hesitant to do a favour if it wasn't for the fact that I looked after them before and I managed to keep them safe and in good health. Besides, they still don't hibernate (as they are too young as I was told), so there isn't any chance of them not waking up.
My friend will bring their tank and proper lighting plus food with instruction how to feed them. I am confident no harm will come to them. At the same time, she has other animals that need taking care of. The budgie will be looked after by her child's friend and that leaves just the rabbit. I offered to give him a home during their absence, even though I have never looked after a rabbit before. My husband, however, used to have a rabbit, so I feel I would be able to fulfil the task with a helping hand.

I will write about my pet sitting experience in April. I will try to post some pics too.
